Types Of Dentist Teeth Cleaning

The type of dental cleaning you need depends on the health of your teeth and gums. After talking to you about any current concerns, we will perform a thorough oral exam to determine the level of care you will need as we clean your teeth.

  • Prophylaxis Dental Cleaning (preventive teeth cleaning) – removes tartar and plaque from the front, back, and sides of teeth.
  • Deep Cleaning (scaling and root cleaning) – includes prophylaxis and cleaning any pockets below the gum line. It’s used to treat gingivitis or gum disease and usually takes more than one visit.
  • Periodontal Maintenance – resembles deep cleaning, but it’s performed several times a year to treat advanced gum disease.
  • Gross Debridement – treats excessive plaque and tartar build-up.

1. Oral Examinations

We use a dental mirror to spot tartar and plaque and any dental issues during your oral examination. This helps us determine where we might need to spend more time. If your hygienist spots cavities along the gums, they call in the dentist for a more thorough exam and to discuss next steps.

2. Removing Plaque & Tartar

Using a scalar, an instrument with a small hook, the hygienist removes stuck-on plaque and tartar that your toothbrush and floss have been missing. We may also use ultrasonic pressure, a combination of water and vibrations, to loosen the plaque.

3. Tooth Polishing

Using gritty toothpaste and a rubber applicator, the hygienist polishes your teeth to remove any remaining tartar and give them that slick shine. You may feel a gentle grinding during the polishing stage, which is similar to brushing your teeth at home.

4. Flossing

The hygienist professionally flosses your teeth to remove any remaining debris between them and just below the gums. At this point, we may provide at-home tips for better oral hygiene.

5. Fluoride Treatment

Children may also receive a fluoride treatment. Fluoride helps rebuild enamel and prevents cavities from forming on little teeth. After a final rinse, the appointment concludes, and it’s time to check out.
